10 Day Forecast

May 24, 2017

Dear Triathlete,

What do you think about that forecast for a race day?

At last check of the water temperatures, Baldwin Lake was 68 degrees. With the upcoming forecast, we are very confident the lake temperatures will be in the low 70’s on race day. It will be comfortable with or without a wetsuit. Tri Greenville will follow the wetsuit guidelines set forth by USA Triathlon. Those guidelines state:

  • Competitors may wear wetsuits if the water temperature is 78 degrees or lower.
  • If the water temperature is between 78.1—83.9 degrees, competitors may wear a wetsuit but will not be eligible for awards.
  • If the water temperature is 84 degrees or above...oh, who am I kidding!

We are looking forward for a nice long weekend that looks about perfect weather-wise. If you can, it would be to your advantage to get into Baldwin Lake and practice a little open water swimming. It is different from the pool you have been training in and will force you to look up to keep your course. The Tri Greenville course maps are available to download on our website to help you know the course before the race. Here are a couple words of caution though:

The swim course will not be marked until Friday, June 2, 2017 because the lake is open for boaters and fisherman and others.

  • It is dangerous to swim outside of the Beach area, so we encourage the open swim training to occur parallel to the beach.
  • The distance between the furthest corner of the concession/changing building and the privacy fence on the other side of the beach property is approximately 100 yards. Tri Greenville’s swim is 4 – 1/2 beach lengths.

It is also to your advantage to check out the bike and run courses as well, so you know what to expect and formulate your strategy for the race.

  • During your practice rides, remember that the roads are open to traffic so wear high visibility clothing and obey the rules of the road.
  • Remember that pre-riding the route is about knowing the course, not developing speed. There will be advance warning and plenty of law enforcement assistance on race day.
  • During your practice runs, remember the run course around the lakes s open to traffic, although the traffic is typically slower. You should run or walk against traffic, but there are some blind curves so dress to be seen and be aware of your surroundings.
  • For training, we suggest that you use the trail along the side of Baldwin Street to South Street and back instead of the road itself. The actual course uses Baldwin Street but it will be closed to traffic on race day. Without the road closure the curve on Baldwin Street is totally blind for cars approaching an opposing runner and they are travelling faster than around the lake. It is best to avoid this altogether when there is a great alternative trail.

If you are unable to get to Greenville before the race, don’t worry. The courses will be well marked and staffed with enthusiastic volunteers to keep you moving toward the finish line.

You may know some people that are waiting to sign up or hesitant to participate. It is not too late so please encourage them and forward this email to them. The old adage “the more the merrier” certainly applies for triathlons & duathlons. Tri-Greenville is a great welcoming event for newbies to the sport of triathlon and veterans alike.

And don’t forget about the kids! We have a great event just for ages 7 to 15 years old with distances and courses designed so that they can hit the water, get on the bike and run the course with minimal training and equipment. All they need is a bathing suit, bike and helmet (even if borrowed), and shoes. We provide the shirt, snacks, prizes and awards, all for only $33. Get your kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, etc. involved by forwarding this email to them and getting them to sign up today!

All proceeds from Tri Greenville benefit the entire community by providing great recreational and cultural opportunities for all ages at affordable prices. Check out the links to the Community Center and Recreation Department for up-coming programs.

Don’t forget to check our Facebook page for other updates and fun information. We hope that you are getting as excited for June 3 as we are. It is going to be a great day!
